For architects we work with, we maintain a library of typical roof details — CAD drawings showing the assembly at the critical roof transitions, specified for Florida code compliance. These are not proprietary; they are sometimes faster than starting from scratch and they reflect what we install.
If you are an architect working on a Florida project and would benefit from a starting point, the details below are available on request.
What is in the library
Ridge details
- Clay tile ridge with copper hip and ridge cap, RAS 127 attachment
- Concrete tile ridge with sectioned ridge cap, RAS 120 attachment
- Slate ridge with copper hip and ridge cap, slate-specific attachment
- Standing-seam metal ridge with continuous vent
- Each detail includes underlayment continuity, fastener spacing, and flashing integration
Hip details
- Clay tile compound hip with hand-formed copper cap
- Concrete tile hip with standard hip cap
- Slate hip with stepped detailing
- Standing-seam metal hip with mechanical-lock continuity
- Each detail includes the bevel angle, the cleat pattern, and the seal between hip cap and field
Valley details
- Clay tile valley with copper W-valley, cleated, with field tile compound-cut
- Concrete tile valley with painted W-valley (where appropriate)
- Slate valley with copper W-valley, slate-specific cuts
- Standing-seam metal valley with continuous panel, no transverse seam
- Each detail includes the valley width, the field termination, and any expansion provisions
Eave details
- Clay tile eave with copper drip edge, gutter integration
- Concrete tile eave with standard drip edge
- Slate eave with copper apron, exposed-rafter or boxed configuration
- Standing-seam metal eave with hand-formed drip edge and gutter strap
- Each detail includes the soffit ventilation provision
What the details specify
For each transition, the drawing includes:
- The substrate (deck plywood, sheathing, structural framing)
- The underlayment (specific product reference, coverage)
- The flashing (material, gauge, profile)
- The fastener (type, size, spacing)
- The field material termination
- Any sealant locations and types
The level of detail is sufficient for an inspector to verify the installation against the drawing. Generic CAD details are typically not at this level.
What is not in the library
Architectural detailing of the roof's exterior expression — that is the architect's work and varies by project. Our details cover the assembly and the waterproofing; the visible profile of a fascia, the proportions of a parapet, the shape of a chimney crown are not our scope.
How to request
If you are working on a Florida project and want to see specific details, email us with the project description. We will share the relevant drawings with the understanding that you may modify them for your specific project conditions.
If our scope expands to include the project, our typical details are pre-approved by the inspectors we work with; this can compress the permit timeline. If our scope does not include the project, we still offer the details — they are public-domain standard practice in our view, and we benefit from seeing more correct detailing in the market.
A note on AIA Continuing Education
We offer a continuing-education session covering these details for AIA chapters in our service area. The session runs approximately 90 minutes and qualifies for HSW credit. Available on request from chapter coordinators or member firms.
